Maths - Statistical Investigation
WALTs:
- ask a question to investigate, then gather information
- sort objects into categories
- display findings using a pictograph
- talk about the information on the graph
- compare the information on the graph
- ask questions about the data shown
Our Question:
Who has the biggest feet in Room 3?
We traced our feet onto paper, then measured from the big toe to the heel - thank you Loretta for helping us to do this accurately. We used point 5 to record 'half'.
We cut out our feet then worked together to sort them. We solved the problem of "what can we do when some are the same size?" and made this pictograph by labelling each line of feet. A small group of children solved this problem after lots of talking, as they had thought that the feet could be put in a single line.
To finish our maths today we talked about what we could see that would help us answer our question, "Who has the biggest feet?" "Three people have the biggest feet. We thought there would be just one person."
Other statements were:
The smallest sized feet are 18 centimetres long.
Three people have 19 centimetre feet.
Lots of people's feet are 19.5 centimetres.
More people had 19 centimetre feet than 18 centimetre feet.
We asked each other questions about what our display showed, and answered these from what we could see.
Sprinklers On Hot Days
Great that so many people remembered to bring togs and a towel so that they could cool off at the end of the day today. Please bring these each day next week too, and if it is hot and sticky we will end the day with a cool off.

Reading Bags & Reading Books
Several people have reading books at home over the holidays given to them by either Mrs Wright or myself. Could you please make sure that these come back to school this week?
Not everyone will take home a reading book this week as Mrs Wright is doing a stock take of junior reading books. Please share a book at home together - reading to your child is important too. Write up what you shared in the reading log at the back of the homework book.
Book bags need to be placed in the yellow box each morning before school. Each child needs a book bag that will fit their homework book (project book) and a reader or journal. These bags help to protect books going home from those accidental spillages and keep everything together.
Thanks for your help with this.

Welcome To Room 3 2015
28
January 2015
Welcome
to Room 3 and to a new block in the school for the year 2 children.
Room 3 Blog: I usually put
up a weekly blog on a Monday night after staff or syndicate meetings. If other things come up in between, I will
put up an extra post. Once the term calendar is confirmed this will also be
there for easy reference to the dates that involve this class.
This
week we will doing activities to help us get to know each other, get along
together and take responsibility for our own learning.
Brain Food/School Milk: Please ensure
that your child has a piece of unprocessed fruit or vegetable each day for
brain food. Please let me know if your
child will not be having
school milk.
Mr Milford will be working
with us to reinforce our bus and road safety skills next week. There will be a road safety test in the
afternoon of Monday 9th February where we will need the assistance
of parents. If you are available, please
email me.
Swimming: Years 1 – 4
will be preparing for the swimming sports with afternoon swim sessions Tuesday
10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 February. The swimming sports will be held at
the pool on Monday 23rd February beginning at 9:00. Junior swimmers
will have races in the therapeutic pool between 10 – 11am. Transport to and
from the pool will be by bus.
Sunhats: need to be worn
this term and in term 4. No hat = no play.
Children may choose something to do under the classroom verandah.
Your
child will have a nightly reading
log (Monday to Thursday), which I would ask you to please sign as this helps
your child to take some responsibility for their learning as they read and tell
you about the story. Their poetry book will come home on a Friday. There will
be spelling to learn and study ladder maths, as the term goes on. This will be
individualised.
Study Ladder: many year 2
children will be very familiar with this free learning site. Glued into the
front of the homework book is your child’s user name and password. www.studyladder.co.nz Please be
sure to log in to this site by 6th
February. By doing this your child
will be given greater access to home activities. If this is not possible, please contact me so
that I can make sure that your child logs in for the first time here at school.
At present I have not set any tasks on this site.
Scooters etc: during school
time these need to be stored behind the seats in front of the classroom windows.
No scooters in the corridor during the day or lying on the path outside. After school scooters & wheels can be
left in the corridor to be locked up over night. Remember that ‘wheels’ are for
term 1 and 4 only. There are 2 scooters and 1 red bike in my corridor since last year. Whose
are these?
I
am really excited about what is planned for this year, and am looking forward
to working with you and your children as they continue on their learning
journey.
Chris
