How disappointed we all were that the weather at the end of last week meant that we couldn't run our athletic sports. Those children 8 years and over had the opportunity today to compete in events and qualify for the zone sports, which will be run at Molyneux Park on Tuesday. Those who have qualified, have a note from Mr Yeoman and Mrs Eastwood in their bags. Good luck and enjoy your first Championship Sports Event - remember to support each other.
Sunhats:
These need to be worn at play and lunchtimes. Please ensure your hat is in your bag. As we have had head lice in our classroom, I would ask that you bring your own hat. No hat sharing in the meantime and this includes Room 3 spare hats.
Speeches:
This week we are working on how to write a speech in class. Speeches will be heard on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th with the eisteddfod assembly being on Thursday 29th at 1:30. The marking schedule will be on a separate post.
Library visits:
As we no longer have a teacher's aide available to walk to and from the library with the class, we can not make these visits unless there are parents willing to walk with us. Please email Mrs Roberts if are available to do this.
Teacher Strike:
Thursday 15th - the school will be closed - a great day to work on your speeches!!
LIFE Education with Pip and Harold:
Room 3 will have sessions in the bus on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Please be sure to be at school on time on Friday as our slot is first up at 9am. Mrs Roberts will take the class to the bus, as I am at a meeting for the day.
Goal Setting Sheets:
At the beginning of term 3 your child set learning goals at the child led interviews. Check these on the sheet in the homework book and have a chat about how they are going. There are still a few weeks left to achieve these.
Spelling:
For the next few weeks we are consolidating our year's learning as we tackle lists of mixed long vowel sounds and decodable words. Please be sure to tool these carefully each night so that you are listening to and looking at the spelling patterns. We are learning strategies to hear and record sounds in words to help us when we want to write words that we don't know. Just rote learning the weekly list does not help us to develop our spelling skills. Check out the revision sheets in books. Each week your child's spelling results are written into their homework book (if the book is at school on Friday), so that these can be reviewed if necessary.
We are back into summer school uniform now. Please make sure that shoes are regulation ones - we shouldn't be seeing bright blue runners now.
Gosh another short week - keep up the great work reading to and with your children at home.

Athletic Sports
After a lovely week the forcast for our sports day is not good - 100% chance of rain. Please check the school facebook page to confirm whether it is on. We have all improved so much during our athletic training rotations. Fingers crossed that the weather is kind to us.
Remember to bring your school sunhat (has a wide brim to protect necks and ears), plenty to drink and eat. A rain jacket may also be a good idea in case of a shower.
Good luck everyone!

Week 4 Term 4
We are practising our athletic skills Monday to Wednesday in preparation for the school athletic sports. Remember to wear your sports uniform.
The Athletic Sports will be held on Thursday 8th November at Molyneux Park, with the postponement date being the following day, Friday 9th November.
The events will start at 9:30am and run through until approximately 2:45pm.
Students will need to wear their school sports uniform with track suits or track pants and school jersey over the top. Sun hats, sun block, a warm jacket and plenty to eat and drink are needed.
All children are to be at the park by 9:15am. Please line up behind the Room 3 cone, so that the roll can be taken. If your child will be travelling to school by bus on the day, please let me know so that we know who to wait for, and your child will be walked or driven to the park – wait in the school office area once you get off the bus.
If you are able to help on this day at an event please email ollieyeoman@stgerards.school.nz. Thank you to those people who have already indicated that they are available to assist. These people need to meet Mr Yeoman in front of the steps at 9:15am on the day of the athletics.
The Athletic Sports timetable will be on the window in the school foyer to enable parents to plan ahead the best time to visit if possible.
Sausages for sports day
The PTA will be selling BBQ sausages for lunch on Thursday. Please send your orders in a named envelope to the school office by Tuesday. No sausages at school on Wednesday.
SUNHATS
There are still some children who do not have sun hats. If your child has lost theirs, they are available from the school uniform shop. (Opening Hours: Monday - 2.45pm to 3.15pm and Friday – 8.45am to 9.15am.) We will be asking your child to sit in the shade at playtime and lunchtime if they do not have their hat.

This will happen on Friday November 9th 11.15 - 12.15.
We are asking children to bring a gold coin donation which will go to the Alexandra/Clyde RSA and the NZ MountedRifles Charity - The Long Walk Home. Parents and friends of the school are more than welcome to attend. A great opportunity for photos so don’t forget your camera.
Assembly will be led by us on Friday at 2:10.
Spelling is in homework books - "ou" sound spelling patterns.
Hoping that the weather gods are kind to us for Thursday.

Week 3 Term 4
A very busy but successful start to the term. Congratulations on the wonderful musical performances last week - the costumes looked absolutely wonderful on stage - thank you for the effort you all put into these.
On Sunday several of our Room 3 children made their First Communion and confirmation with the Bishop and Father Vaughan. Thank you to those parents who catered for an amazing 'party' in the hall after the mass.
Athletics:
We are practising Monday to Thursday this week, then Monday to Wednesday next week. Please wear school sports uniform these days. Our school athletics will be held at Molyneux Park next Thursday. Anyone available to help in any way please contact Mr Yeoman. The PTA have agreed to provide sausages in bread ($2). Please have your orders in to the school office no later than Wednesday. Don't forget to order for parents or grandparents too. If there is anyone able to assist the PTA with cooking then serving the food at 12:15, please contact Donna Ballantyne.
Library:
Come on you creative people - help Mrs Rendall out with a name for the new library mascot.
Spelling:
Working on the 'ou' sound, as in spout and flower. Have a check through homework books and revise the spelling patterns we have covered this year over the next couple of weeks.
Homework books & Poetry books:
Some missing in action at home already - we did have almost all of them at school by the end of week 1.
Headlice:
We have headlice in our class, so please inspect your child's hair and treat as soon as possible.
Have a great week.

Week 2 Term 4
This is the week where we share all that hard work that has gone into Aladdin. Thank you all so much for helping your child to collect what is needed for their costume and to Mrs Roberts for working so hard getting the Room 3 part of the performance polished. Remember to get your tickets at the school office. The PTA have subsidised the cost of these - thank you.
Some of the words for the songs are a bit shaky, so copies of these have come home for some home learning in the next couple of days.
Spelling:
Oops - a large number of people forgot to get their homework books out at home last week, and this showed in the test of 'er' spelling patterns words. Have another check of these this week. Remember the 'Growth Mindset' thinking around mistakes - they are an important part of learning, but you need to use these as another opportunity to learn. Remember that we are learning to listen to the sounds across a word, and as well as the clean sounds, (1 letter = 1 sound) that we can hear, we need to know about different spelling patterns that use more than 1 letter to make them, and can also have different patterns to make that same sound. Those people who have paid for STEPs need to be on this programme and make as much use of it as possible to secure spelling and word knowledge.
Production Week = early nights Tuesday and Wednesday and save your energy for great performances.
Please be at the theatre at 9am on Wednesday and Thursday. Bus students will be taken to the theatre - please wait in the office area as this will either be by walking or by car. Students will also be returned to school in time for buses. Kelly Club will collect students from the theatre at 3pm on these days.
Sunhats are now a compulsory part of the school uniform. Make sure that there is a named one in your school bag.
Sacramental Programme:
A special week for those who have taken part in the Sacramental Programme, with Confirmation and First Holy Communion being celebrated with Bishop Michael on Sunday at 9am. Please make an effort to attend this mass to support our classmates as they take this next step in their faith journey.
Well done to those people who completed the follow-up home activity about earthquake preparation. These need to be taken to Mrs Turnhout in the office.
Thank you O'Neill-Te Huia family for sharing some home prayers which are on our prayer table.
No homework this week - just energy and enthusiasm for a fantastic production.

Sunshine On Line
Lucky us - 3 new computers that we have just got set up for our learning. While playing round with these I checked out the new books (which are being added all the time) to Sunshine On Line. Many of these are N/F, which many of us prefer to read. Some interesting titles are there about insects and butterflies - a perfect opportunity for home as well as school reading. As we looked last term at fiction (made up stories) and non-fiction (facts), this is perfect for us to check the titles and N/F indication when looking through.
The PTA have generously paid for us to have free access to this learning space, so please make use of it. The login and password were glued into homework diaries at the beginning of the year. Please email me chrisbeilby@stgerards.school.nz if you can't find this.
The books can either be read by the child on the screen, or by clicking on the speaker button they are read to the child with the text being highlighted.
Go for it!!

Week 1 Term 4
Hoping that everyone had an enjoyable holiday - I had the most amazing one - very lucky to see so many different things, along with attending my nephew's wedding in a small town in Germany -Freudenstadt, at the edge of the Black Forest.
Super to see everyone in summer uniform - check out what are uniform shoes please, as there are some 'runners' which are not part of our summer uniform.
A few people have homework, poetry books and home diaries somewhere at home. Please have a look around. Our goal of self management becomes so much more difficult if things are going home oin scraps of paper. Would love to have 27 homework books in the tray on Friday.
For the next 2 weeks our focus is on our production Aladdin Trouble. Tickets for this are now on sale at the school office - 6pm Thursday 25th and Friday 26th. Our first theatre practice will be this Friday 19th and we ask that students are picked up from the Alexandra Memorial Theatre in Skird St. Bus students will be brought back to school in time for their bus. Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th we will also be at the theatre until 2:55. Thank you to those people who have costumes sorted for this. Please contact Mrs Roberts if you have any problems - what each group needs has been published on the blog.
Children have brought home an information sheet about "Shake out", with home activities to talk about as a family. Please check the reading folders for this.
School Athletics will be held on Thursday 8th November. We will start practising for these in week 3. Sports uniforms can be worn this week.
T-ball starts next Tuesday straight after Labour Day holiday. Those who put their names forward to join teams have information in their bags about this.
Eisteddfods will be heard on Monday 26th November - week 7. This term, students will be delivering a speech. In preparation for this our writing programme will cover how to write a speech, and we are doing a mini inquiry about insects/minibeasts and along with reading and research will write a short speech about our chosen minibeast. This can be the speech for the eisteddfod, but if your child has a different passion that they want to base their speech on, they are welcome to prepare this at home with you, or add to the speech written at school. If you have any 'insect' books at home we would love to share them.
Spelling:
This week we continue to focus on the 'er' spelling patterns. There will be a spelling test on Friday morning before we head to the theatre.
Fridge Words: thorax, abdomen, antennae. Let's get some descriptive sentences using these on Friday.
Reading:
Remember to read every night. Research shows that being 'read to' is so important for the development of reading skills. Share a book of interest.
Religious Education:
This week we have been looking at Traditional Prayers and there is a family discussion sheet in the homework books.
Looking forward to a busy, eventful term.
