Week 3 Term 3

Four weeks until camp - exciting!!  Thank you to those people who returned their camp slips and indicated whether they would like to join the camp as parents. If I haven't heard from you please get your slip back immediately.

We are working on the opening part of our mihimihi, where we talk about the area where we live.
We introduce ourselves with:

Kia ora koutou      - a greeting

Ko Kopowai te maunga  -  our mountain is Kopowai - the Old Man Range

Ko Manuherikia te awa     - we have a choice of river depending which we live closest to
Ko Matau te awa          Clutha River - comes from Lake Wakatipu, the story the giant of Wakatipu

Ko ururwhenua  te whenua     - our Central Otago area

Listen to your child say this part - the more we do it the easier it will get - we will be practising this each day in class.

Once we have mastered this we will continue with the bits we already know about Mum & Dad before we learn to talk about our brothers and sisters and our family, then finally our own name.
The Te Reo WALTs for the term are:

  • to be able to confidently say our mihimihi to introduce ourselves
  • understand the protocols for a powhiri at the marae
  • design a kowhaiwhai pattern for our family and talk about what it represents
  • perform confidently as part of the Room 3 & 4 Kapahaka group
Cross Country:
Separate information sheet.  We have all walked and run the track that we will use, so it has been decided that the walk before we start racing won't be needed this year.
Be sure to bring a drink and an extra to nibble on, although we are the last races of the day. We are "Going For Gold!" which means that we are all going to do our very best and encourage everyone else to do the same - it's not about getting the gold medal as the winner!
Remember that lunch is at 12:00.
If your child is leaving with you, please send a note so that we can mark this off.  It is really difficult trying to keep track of people at the ned of the day otherwise.

Noah - the school musical: Rooms 3 & 4 will be: boys: Jamaican dancers, (Man O Man), girls: doves or ballet dancers. (Follow Your Heart/Fly Little Dove) . We will be working on the singing of the songs that we are all part as the term goes on.  Not enough hours in the day at the moment.

We welcome Father Pat to Room 3 this week as part of our R.E. learning. Our new word to understand is "Messiah".

Saturday is Family Mass - we have some people who will take part in this.  Great to see that there will be a liturgical dance.  Tea at 5pm BYO finger food. Mass at 6pm.

Homework:
Reading
Spelling
Watching some highlight of the Olympics: we have talked about the Ancient Olympics and were surprised at how long ago these games started.
Maths

Have a great week.  Good luck to all you runners who have shown real commitment to your training.

Morning Programme 5th August 2016

Spot the birthday cake...

Today's marvellous crew got Morning Programme for Term 3 off to a magnificent start

"Well Done" team

Dusty got us underway today, telling us about a place special to her.  Dusty's special place is Dunedin, a city on the coast of Otago.  Dusty used to live in Dunedin so this makes it a favourite spot.  She has lots of her family there and enjoys going there to catch up with them all, especially her wee baby cousin, Crickett.  She also likes going to the shops, like Toyworld!

Next up, was Payton who told us about a very exciting current event - The Olympic games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The very first games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece and did you know, they didn't even wear clothes!  The Olympic Games happen every 4 years.  New Zeland has 199 athletes competing.  There are 206 countries from around the world competing. Unfortunately Russia doesn't have all their athletes competing because they haven't been honest.  Payton is really looking forward to watching some gymnastics.  What are you looking forward to?
After Payton was Alia, who spoke to us about famous New Zealand singer and recording artist, Anika Moa.  She started writing songs when she was only 13 and then when she was just 21, she topped the NZ singles chart with her album called "Thinking Room."  Now she is older and has 3 children, she writes songs for babies and children too.  Alia was lucky enough to meet her after she performed in Oamaru.

Following Alia, was Quinn who shared a book review with us. Quinn likes learning about skeletons, so he shared a non-fiction book called "See Inside Your Body" by Katie Daynes and Colin King. Quinn told us how we have 206 bones when we are grown up and that the bones in our spine protect our spinal cord.  He told us how we would be a big blob of jelly if we didn't have any bones or muscles to hold us up.  He also told us how our brain is the control centre for our bodies - it is like a computer.  What an interesting book.

Jelena also shared a book review.  She shared a fiction book from one of her favourite series of books, Zac Power.  "Zac Runs Wild" by H I Larry, illustrated by Cal Bennett is about Zac and his friend Anna who go to a spy camp.  Their mission is to get past wild animals without getting hurt...  Jelena really enjoys these books as they make her want to read more and more.  She recommends them for boys and girls and told us we can get them out from the Alexandra Public Library.

Last up today was the birthday boy, Jack. (Yes, another 8 year old in room 3!)  And how appropriate that Jack told us how to make a chocolate birthday cake.  He shared the recipe with us and then we went to the staff room to follow the instructions and make the cake. When we finished, we got to try a little bit of the mixture, it was delicious.  Later with Mrs Beilby we got to eat the finished product.  Yum-o and a BIG "Happy Birthday Jack"

Camp Meeting - Permission Slips

It was super to see parents at the Parent Meeting last night. Thank you to those people who have already returned the permission slips - this allows us to continue with the planning.
For those children who did not have a parent at the meeting last night, the permission slip has come home today (Friday).  Please check your child's bag as we would like all these slips back by Monday so that we can arrange the appropriate number/gender/skills of parents to accompany the camp.

Cross Country Training

With the unpredictable weather and also the fact that at this stage there are no parents able to come with us over to the Cross Country track - we will not be going training Thursday afternoon.  Will try for Monday afternoon.  Please let me know if you are able to accompany us.

Week 2 Term 3

Where did that first week go?  After getting excited about snow it seems that we only have the cold winds from the Antarctic.  Great for having ice to skate on and to really feel what "Jack Frost" does according to our poem this week.

Last 2 days of skating - remember to be at school before the bell on Tuesday, as the bus will leave at 8:55am.

Years 3 & 4 Camp: the first information sheet has come home today (Monday) with the dates and the planned programme. This is in preparation for the camp consultation meeting which will be held in Room 4 on Thursday 4th at 7pm. At this meeting we will answer any questions, and forms will be given out to be completed for each child. This form also asks for parental assistance.  If you are unable to attend this meeting, your child will be given this form on Friday - so please check the reading bag.  The children were very excited about what is planned.

Cross Country we have been training each day for this event.  On Thursday (weather permitting) we will leave school at 1:30 to walk to the track over the Road/Rail bridge to walk the track, then have run over it.  Years 3 & 4 will complete 2 laps at the cross country. We need some parents who are able to walk to and from the track with us please. I will be pleased to hear from any willing walkers.

Waste Audit with Anna Robinson will be this Thursday 4th at 11:40am. Any parents who wish to join us would be welcome.  We will be investigating what we have thrown in the rubbish this week, and the seniors will be comparing what we found with the amount of rubbish we had last year.  A great opportunity to see whether we are becoming more enviro friendly as a school.  Hopefully there will be far less rubbish than we had last year, with us having 'nude lunches', recycling and composting.

Interhouse School Olympics will be held on Thursday 18th August.  This will be organised by our senior leaders - you'll agree that they did a fantastic job of the Rippa Rugby tournament on the last day of term.

Assembly on Friday at 2:10 led by Rooms 1 & 2

Homework

  1. Reading - the more you read, the better you get - write up your reading in your log every night.

  3. Maths - study ladder
  4. Cross Country runs - fitness
  5. Morning Programme preparation
  6. Olympics in Rio - what can you find out?
