Saturday Cricket

Mr Ryan's cricket team is playing in Cromwell this weekend.  The game will start at 9:00am and will be played at the south end of the Cromwell College grounds.  It can be accessed off Barry Avenue opposite Mayo Place.  Good luck for a great game.  Remember to let Shane know if you are unable to play.

Getting Emails When I Post

Thank you for your patience while we got this set up.  The 'gadget' is now on the blog apparently and all you need to do is add your email address.  I do try to do one weekly post and then add information as it comes to hand if necessary.  Often this is not until after the Monday Staff Meeting.  This week the major information was about the swimming sports.  I hope that having access to an instant email will improve the communication.  Please let me know if you are having any difficulty.

Triathlon Training/Walk and Wheel Week

On Friday we will start our biking training for the triathlon next Thursday, so could children please have a bike at school if possible.  Bikes need to be parked in the bike stand area near the sand pit.  We will train after 2pm so bikes can be dropped off at lunch time. If it is awkward to bring bikes to and from school, they can be left in our corridor over night.  We will also train on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Walk and Wheel Week:
Yesterday we checked how people had come to school and will be doing the same every day next week.  We input our tallies each day, hoping that we might have a class that will win a major prize.  If it is possible assist your child to walk, scooter or bike to school (or part of the way).

Library Books

Just a reminder that it is our library day tomorrow, Friday.  We need to have our books back so that we can take a new book for the week.  Some people have books outstanding from last year, please have a look under the bed, as the computer will not let me issue new ones.  Having a library book to share at home is part of the reading programme.

Discovery Time

Tomorrow at 1:30 will be the first Discovery Time.  The theme is "water".  What amazing thinkers your children are when they generate things that they would like to do about water.  I am learning from Julie about this programme so I am as excited as the children about the first session for the year.  Some people have chosen water sliding, so togs and a towel will be needed.
If there is anyone available to help, it would be great to see you at 1:30

Reading At Home

Each night your child should bring home a book to read. Please record what has been read in the reading log at the back of the homework book.  I hope that books going home are ones that you can enjoy with your child.  If you are concerned about the level being too hard or too easy please don't hesitate to contact me. At the moment our WALT for reading is to make our reading sound like talking by using speech marks and full stops.

I am working on routines, so will share the reading routine so that you can assist your child. Once this is established I hope that it will become a habit of getting ready for the day.
Children need to bring their book bags into the classroom when they arrive at school.  I would like to hear as many as possible read their favourite page and check their reading log.  Once we have shared their book they need to put their book bag into the yellow box just inside the classroom door.  When I take a group for reading I expect children to bring their book bag to the group lesson so that I can exchange books.  After the lesson the book bag needs to be put into their school bags ready to take home.  I am still picking up books left in the corridor after school.  Expect your child to have a book.

At the beginning of the year many children returned large numbers of books from home. Thank you for this as they are expensive to replace. This year if the reading book does not come back, your child will have reading with the group but will not be given another book to take home until the other is returned. This will mean that we can keep sets of books for groups to use for instructional reading.
Thanks for helping out with this.

On Fridays a library book and the poetry book will come home in the book bag.  Could everyone please check at home for their poetry books, as several have not come back to school since going home in the first week of the term.  Poetry is part of the reading programme. Poetry books need to come back to school on Mondays.

I hope this clarifies the process.

Swimming Sports

After swimming sessions last week I have entered Thomas Mitchell in the main pool events and everyone else in the length races in the therapeutic pool.  For those keen to enter the main pool races I have spoken to individual parents.

The sports in this pool will commence  around 10:15 ish, to be on the safe side please be at the pool at 10.

Children need to be at the pool in their house colours by 8:50am.  Please get changed, then take your bag and colourful clothes to where your house is sitting.  Parents feel free to sit with your children in their house.

Thank you to those who have offered to help with timing - please meet Liz Anderson & Deb O'Neill on the window side of the pool at 8:50am.

Bus children: if you are not being dropped at the pool, please wait in the foyer by the office.Mrs Eastwood will arrange transport for you to the pool.  Room 3 will be locked.

Good luck everyone.  Go the best house!   I have seen some amazing swimmers last week.  Lots of different races, something for everyone.  Have a blast, but remember to encourage each other to do their best.

What's Happening? Week 3

Yippee, I'm in!!

Thank you for the amazing turnout at the School Mass this morning - a great start to the year.

Yes, life is very busy in the junior rooms - Julie did keep reminding me.  It has been wonderful getting to know all your children - a fantastic bunch of keen learners.  Thank you for your patience as we established reading levels, although there may still be a bit of tweaking to be done with the groupings.
I like to send home books that your children can read and enjoy.  On some occasions children may have the same book twice when they choose from their browsing box, this does not mean that their reading is not moving ahead - often there are favourites that need to be read more than once because they are so well enjoyed.  Please feel free make a time to talk to me if you have any concerns.

I was pleased to meet so many of you on Thursday evening at the Meet The Teacher Evening.  If anyone was unable to attend and would like a copy of the information sheet, there are copies in the classroom.

I now have copies of the National Standards for Year 3 which I will send home inside the homework books, the Year 2 information will come home as soon as it is to hand.

Homework:
Homework books will come home this week.  There is a reading log in the back of the book.  Please fill this in each night. Some children will bring home spelling and tables sheets to learn which will be tested on Fridays, while others amy have lists of words or word games which will be part of their homework.  This extra homework will begin later in the term.

Swimming:
Years 1 - 4 are swimming on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon this week. We are travelling by bus and will be back at school in time for most buses. If your child needs to be back for a bus that leaves school before 2:55, please let me know.
The Swimming Sports are next Tuesday 25th, starting at 9:00am, please arrange to drop your child at the pool by 9:00am.  If you arrive at school on a bus, there will be some transport in cars available, however we need to be vigilant of the new laws regarding car seats for our junior children.  Buses have been booked for the return trip to school.  Still plenty of vacancies for helpers at these sports!

Assembly:
Room 6 will lead the first assembly of the year on FRIDAY at 2:10. Please note the change of day this year.

Friday Mass:
This year instead of classes attending mass on Fridays, there will be school masses.  The first of these is this Friday 21st at 12:00.  We would love it if you could join us.

School Triathlon:
Thursday afternoon 6th March.  Get those bikes out, check that they are road worthy and have a run - we'll practice the swimming this week.  After the swimming sports we will organise some biking practice at school as part of our P.E. programme.

We welcome Mrs Donaldson into Room 3 on Thursday, as I will be in Dunedin with Mrs Ward at a meeting.

Welcome to the Room 3 Blog

Great, Julie has helped me set up a new blog for our room.  Looking forward to seeing people tonight at the Meet the Teacher Evening.  Please bring your tea from 5:30. There will be a welcome to everyone and some information from Trina at 6:15 in Room 6, then people move around the classrooms. Rooms 1&2 and 5 at 6:35, then Rooms 3&4 at 6:55.  The purpose is just to share expectations, homework and an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.
