Week 6 Term 3

Count down to camp! Yeah!
Please look for those homework and poetry books at home - there are still several people who have not yet established the routine of getting these home and back to school.  This self management challenge is a real stumbling block to their learning.
Camp:

  • Thank you to the 12 people who returned their camp notices by the due date last Friday. Please check for these in bags. Named hard copies were given to everyone last Wednesday.
  • A meeting will be held on Tuesday at 7pm in Room 3 for those parents attending camp. Please make an effort to attend.
  • Many Hands Makes Light Work sheet is in homework books.  We are practising looking after our gear and ourselves, as well as helping as a member of "TEAM FAMILY". This is part of our camp preparation.
  • Keep working on knowing your mihimihi
  • Prepare your singing eisteddfod - these will be heard at camp. Check the separate post for the criteria.

Spelling: We continue to listen for and record 'long u' spelling patterns. Tooling needs to be completed each night. Please check the homework book for each week's test score and work again on any errors.

Musical - Aladdin: the lyrics for our song are in homework books to learn. We need to know these by the end of next week. Mrs Roberts will be working with the class on their staging and costumes for this.

Kapahaka Preschool Centres Performances = 4th September, we have been working hard this year and will be sharing our skills. As well as knowing the words and actions we have been learning how to manage ourselves as part of the school Kapahaka team, and to respect our leaders.

Years 4 - 8 Touch - registration for this after school competition is coming up, please email carolynlyon@stgerards.school.nz if you would like to play. She will have more information.

School Photos = 6th September

School Mass = Sunday 9th September

Wednesday:
  • Gymnastics - wear your sports uniform
  • School mass
Friday:
  • Homework books at school
  • Assembly Room 6

Don't forget to read for enjoyment each night and remember that being read to as often as possible is really important. Enjoy sharing books together.

Have a great week!

National Poetry Day - Friday 24th August

To celebrate this day we wrote 'river' poems.

Congratulations to Arn, Jack M and Findlay whose poems were chosen to be mounted in the display at Central Stories.  All the other poems submitted are in a booklet along with poems from well known poets.  The display is in the foyer of the building.

Best to see these in the raw - my photograhy skills leave a bit to be desired, sorry. Room 6 students also wrote poetry for this and have several poems mounted in the display.

Week 5 Term 3

Congratulations to those people who took part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation yesterday.

Sports uniforms for Wednesday gymnastics.

We have started learning the songs for the musical Aladdin. Our scene is the marketplace - a super song. We'll have the words for this in our homework books once we have the tune secure. Mrs Roberts will be working on the costumes and choreography for this.

Many of us have our mihimihi completed and typed. Those that are completed have been emailed home. The others will be typed this week so that work can be done at home.

We enjoyed soccer coaching with Tessa on Thursday.

Poetry - National Poetry Day is this Friday. Last week we wrote acrostic RIVER poems and many of these got to Central Stories by Friday 17th. When planning I had forgotten about our stike day - so it was fairly hectic getting these published in time. Check out the Central Stories display. Poems will also be in poetry books for enjoyment. A couple of samples below. It's exciting to see the choice of vocabulary being used independently.

Racing riding rivers

Inspiring river blue

Vines of water racing through

Exciting treasures down by the river

Riding down rivers

Skimming stones on water

By Arn Cuthbertson

Manukerikia, fast water flows there

And racing waves like mountains I can’t bear

New birds born, ready to start a life in the wild

Use your time to lie on the stones and look at the new spring style

Horrendously waving trees when the wind’s high!

Excited birds singing and swinging in the wind

Racing dogs zooming past

Icicles pointy like a knife

Keen to read a book or two, draw a picture of the river

I sunbathe on the ground and feel the hot sparkling sun on my face

A beautiful place to be on a hot day.

By  Eden Breen

Spelling: We are listening for long 'u' sounds in words and identifying the spelling patterns. Because of Growth Mindset and working on spelling each night, some people are really securing these patterns and this skill is becoming evident in their writing. Well done to you. Please check homework books for the practice lists.

Keep reading a variety of books and practising your maths.
