Reading Eggs Logging On

I have received an email from the promoters explaining that the first time a child logs in they will need to complete a placement test.  I will try and get as many as possible to do this at school, but with 3 computers and 23 children, and needing to teach reading and writing at the same time, if there are technical issues that people need help with - it is not always possible to assist with new programmes.
If you are working on this at home, please support your child initially until they master the system.  As I said this is a free offer for students for a short time and the free trial starts today. Take up the offer if you want.

Ash Wednesday Mass

We have sorted all the readers today and they have brought home what they need to read on Wednesday.
The reading and psalm are quite difficult but what Father Pat wants.
First Reading: Jack & Savanah
Psalm: Charlotte O, Sam, Charlotte K, Lily
Prayers of the Faithful: Pippa, Jedi, Bella B, Tamai, Bella D and Amelia.

Thanks so much for giving them some help. With swimming all morning tomorrow we will only be able to have a little practice in the afternoon.

Our singing is fantastic so we'd love you to join us for this special celebration in the church's year.

Week 5 Term 1

Wow, nearly half way through the term already.  It was wonderful to see parents join us at assembly on Friday.  I am very excited about the quality of language used in last week's writing.  This week we will be working on a recount of the swimming sports, which includes high quality language - "WOW words" we call them.
Tomorrow is school kapahaka.  We are practising now for the local school festival which takes place at Molyneux Park on Sunday 9th April. Room 3 will also be working with Ms Tamati for 20 minutes on Maori games.
Reading Eggs: I have registered the class on this site for the free trial period. that has been offered. When I had year 5&6 we also did this and many people enjoyed using this site for not only reading but writing activities as well. The site address, logins and passwords are on the inside cover of homework books.

Another busy week:
Monday: Kapahaka and Ms Tamati
Tuesday: Swimming sports - Ms Bennett will be taking the roll at the pool at 8:55am. If you have a child arriving at school by bus on Tuesday, please let me know urgently so that we can arrange sufficient transport from school to the pool for them. We will travel back to school by bus.
Wednesday: Ash Wednesday mass 9am in the church.  Room 3 will be leading this mass. We would love for you to join us. I will be at Reading Recovery In-service in the afternoon so Ms Bennet will be teaching.
Thursday: New Zealand Playhouse performance 1:30 pm

Homework

Reading: Great to see  most people reading every night now. Sunshine on line and reading eggs can also be recorded here.
Spelling: Lists are coming home this week. The process for doing this is well established with most  people and they can explain how SAY, SOUND, COVER, WRITE, CHECK works - I realise that I have forgotten to add check to this week's sheet. This list will be tested on Friday morning and I will record their scores in their books.
Religious Education: Ms Bennett will send home an activity every now and then.
Triathlon Training: Please make sure that your bikes are in good condition and have these at school on Monday 6th to practise the run to bike transition process, ready for the triathlon on Tuesday 7th. Take a run, swim or bike ride to get ready for the event.

Have a great week.

Room 3 & 4 Assembly Tomorrow & Monday Morning Prayer

A wee reminder that we are the host classes at assembly tomorrow. We will be sharing our amazing writing and visualisation of this.  Love for you to come.

On Monday it is our turn to lead Monday morning prayer in the church. Ms Bennett will be taking the class to this. Eden, Liam, Zack and Tara will be reading, while Bella B and Charlotte O will be the prayer leaders at the beginning and the end.

Lots more jobs at church next week as we are also scheduled to be the class to lead at the Ash Wednesday Mass at 9:00am.  Please join us in this special celebration of the marking of ashes which marks the beginning of Lent.

Swimming Sports Entries

Quite an excited group swam lengths in the main pool today and are very keen to do this at the sports. I have seen them all swim in lane 6 today, and feel that they are capable of swimming in the non-championship event. I will arrange to have a senior student in the lane with some of them on the day of the sports.
Julie and I talked about how the sports will work on Tuesday and agreed that if these children are entering in main pool events, they will not be swimming in the junior sports events as well.  I spoke to the children involved at the end of the day and all were very keen to swim in the main pool events. The children involved are: Pippa, Bella D, Charlotte O, Amelia, Tara, Lily, Tamai, Eden and Jedi.
These children will be entered in the non-championship freestyle and backstroke races in the 9 and under age group.  Please contact me if you wish to have your child swim solely in the junior sports in the therapeutic pool.

See you all on Tuesday.

ICPE Mission Invitation

Today we enjoyed sharing a session with these young evangelists in the church.

They have invited everyone to join with them again tonight at the church and again tomorrow night. All children were given a slip to bring home today with the information.

Some WOW writing

We began today learning about using WOW words to describe thunder and lightning. We worked for a very short time with a buddy and haven't had time for everyone to share yet.  I was so excited when I read this written by Zack and Ted and thought it worth sharing.

"There is lightning. It looks like a flashing crack in the sky."

Our poem this week is about a description of Tawhiri the son of Rangi and Papa who was not happy when his parents were separated. We talked about the language in the poem before we wrote.

Week 4 Term 1

Thank you everyone who attended mass this morning, and a special thank you to Jada who read the prayer of the faithful as our class representative. It was an exciting end to see the Evangelisation Team share a liturgical dance. This group of young people will share with the school/parish at the 9am Wednesday mass, then work in class over the morning. I look forward to their input.

Reading Logs: Thank you for the comments written in these - this is a great avenue for home/school communication. After reading these I checked the browse boxes again and found that we are still "learning to put our books back in the correct box" - this explains why a couple of people took home difficult texts. I also continued to tweak the reading groupings last week so maybe some people were confused as to their group. There is a clear list on the wall now to help us out! Having hoped to have limited the number of groups it is clear that I am unable to do this for a start, which means that I will not be seeing every group every day, but you can expect a text home every night from the browse box.

Spelling: It was wonderful to have Zoe and Maisie (Dunstan High School Work Day) to help us on Friday as we completed our first spelling test and independent tooling of our list for this week.  I taught both of them in Year 5/6 when Mrs Eastwood first introduced Spelling Alive to school, so they were able to ably assist. There are still quite a number of people not secure in how this is to be done so we will do our spelling again in class this week. It is important that the spelling is tooled carefully and we learn the process of how to listen to sounds and record them in order, rather than just focus on a product of 5 correctly spelled words for the Friday test.

Swimming Sports: For those children swimming in the main pool races, entries will be taken by Wednesday. If there are any parents (other than Pippa) who wish to have their children entered in these races, please email me by Tuesday.  The events are 1 length freestyle, backstroke or breaststroke. A championship race is where strokes must be correct and no stopping. Non-championship, people can stop and have a break and exact technique is not so important.  Any Year 3 children would be entered in "9 and under" age group. Age as at 9th March. Our last 2 swimming sessions are Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Assembly 2:10 Friday: Rooms 3 & 4 will lead this. We kindly swapped with Rooms 1, 2 & 7 as they will be away on camp.

Does anyone have any stories of Rangi and Papa at home that we can share.  This week we are looking at comparing retold texts. We will also be looking at the family tree of Rangi and Papa as part of our Inquiry about Belonging. This is out Maori link, as well as writing a descriptive text from our "visualisation" of what we think one of the gods might look like. Visualisation is a reading skill which is a focus for us.

As a class we are continuing to focus on self management of both on task work, but also how we move about the classroom and get ourselves organised for activities.  This is challenging for some at present but we will help each other.  On a Monday morning we bring our book bag into the classroom, Glue our new poem into our poetry book and put our poetry book into the poetry box. We also make sure that we have put our chair out and have our pencil case on our desk with a sharp pencil ready to go.  Tools of the trade!

Homework: Reading and enjoying texts at home. Great to see some people making a great start to 100 days of reading.  keep this up.

Morning Programme

Our first Friday morning programme went very well with the children giving informative talks about their topics.  They were well prepared and confident as they spoke to the class.  This Friday Group 2 will have their turn.  Please check your child's homework book or scroll down the blog if you're not sure when they are due for their turn.  It is a good idea to have a record of their talk on an A4 page, even if they are going to speak without notes, because this can be included in the class book. The children can then use the book as a reading resource.

Wednesday 15 February 2017

Sunshine On Line

The user name and password for this reading site is glued inside the front cover of homework books. This reading can also be included in reading logs. There are some new science non fiction books here that will be interesting reading especially for some of our boys. The readers are levelled so choose to work on texts that are a couple of levels below where we are reading in class, as the children have read mainly PM books which have more predictable text patterns for younger readers.
Thank you PTA for paying for this site to assist with increasing our reading levels.  Very grateful.

School Internet Use Contract

We had our first ICT session this morning with Mrs Flannery, so procedures for internet use have been explained and the school contract has been glued into the back of each child's inquiry book.   This book has come home tonight. Please read and talk about this with your child, then sign the document.  This needs to be returned to school tomorrow along with homework books and reading logs.
It is important that we have books at school each day - some homework and poetry books have gone astray already.  Thanks for attending to this.

Monday 13 February 2017

Maths Focus

In weeks 1 and 2 we worked on 'ME' maths where we recorded facts about ourselves, including some measurements of height, foot, hand span etc.  This information was then used to begin Statistical Investigations for the rest of last and this week.  We are learning to pose some questions for investigation, to sort out the data we collect, display it in a format such as a bar chart, and make statements about what the data tells us.  The children are beginning to understand that such data can be useful.  For example, by finding out the (average) heights of children aged 7 or 8, classroom furniture can be manufactured so that it is just right for them in years 3 and 4.  Clothing manufacturers know just how big to make clothes for that age group.  Hopefully you will discuss these ideas with the children so that they see how statistics applies to real life.
The other part of our maths focus is on probability.  We are finding out what is highly likely, somewhat likely, or not likely, through games and scenarios.  Other terms are used such as, certain, possible, impossible etc.
Next week we will begin numeracy knowledge and strategy lessons, with a focus on addition and subtraction.

Saturday 11 February 2017

Week 3 Term 1

Great to see some people at the Duathlon today & also photos of others at "Take A kid Fishing".  A stunning day for these family events. Super to meet so many parents at the Meet the Teacher night on Wednesday.  The information given out on the night will be put in reading bags for those who missed out.
School Mass - Sunday 19th: This is the opening mass and it is a time to welcome new families and announce the school leaders from Room 6. We Belong to the Parish and this is our 'it's good to be back get together' - please prioritise this as we celebrate the Eucharist together.
Well done to all those people who have begun the reading challenge for 2017. I check logs each Friday when all homework books are handed in.  I see that there is a place to record weekend reading - even though I have signed your page off, if you read at the weekend please record this to help you gain your 100 days of reading. Thank you to those parents who have already written such positive comments in these books. I do like each child to have a reading bag please.  This just keeps everything together and books safely away from leaking drink bottles.  As a school we have spent several thousand dollars on upgrading the junior readers, so we want to take responsibility for looking after them.
The Room 3 process on a Monday morning is to bring the reading bag in with the poetry book.  Find the new poem for the week and glue it in before school.  Then put the poetry book in the poetry box. Reading bags go in the red box ready to grab at reading time.
Brain Food: this is to be a piece of fruit or vegetable that is unprocessed please.  We live in a fruit bowl where fruit is generally freely available. We eat about 10:40, so I have been asking those with bars etc for brain food to wait until playtime to eat these.
St Gerards Permission Form: could you please make sure that these are all returned to the office.  I have been asked about BYOD in Room 3 and said 'no'.  I have discussed this with Mrs Flannery who is the teacher in charge of ICT and she agrees with this. We have 3 computers and 2 i-pads to use as well as the access to the COW (computers on wheels) that comes to the room when Mrs Flannery teaches ICT.
Kapahaka starts on Monday with Ms Tamati.  It's wonderful to see an enthusiastic bunch of year 3s joining up, as we lost such a great Year 8 bunch last year.  I remember them in the group as year 4's though!! If your child is in the group, the first big event will be performing at the Ururwhenua Kapahaka Festival at Molyneux Park on Sunday 9th April.
Spelling: This week we are tooling our spelling lists in our Reading/Spelling books in preparation for bringing spelling home as homework. Next week a practice list will come home. All children should be totally independent with their spelling. I will explain more about spelling next week.  It is not about learning the words by rote, but about perfecting the process of hearing and recording the sounds in order, then checking that it looks right. Anyone who wants to pop in and talk about how this works is welcome. I have completed the testing to level each child so after the practice sheet home, each child will bring home their "level' sheet.
Study Ladder: great to see some people have already accessed this site from home as well as from school.

Homework
  1. Reading - every night please.  Browse boxes are well topped up now, and grouping readjusted. Just getting "Sunshine-on-line" sorted. User name & password will be in homework books this week.
  2. Swimming - togs Tuesday and Thursday - thank you for the help at the pool - really appreciated.
  3. Triathlon - coming up on 7th March - now is the time to get out on your bikes.
Looking forward to another busy week of learning.

Morning Programme

Room 3 Morning Programme
Morning programme will be part of our Oral Language programme each Friday.  The purpose is to practise speaking and listening skills and to question others to gain more information, or to clarify information.
Morning programme topics will need to be prepared at home prior to the presentation date.  They can be prepared on a piece of A4 paper, so that once they have been presented they can be glued in a class book as a record.  As this is oral language and not simply a reading task, it is a good idea to practise speaking clearly with a suitable volume and making the presentation interesting (this may include showing items, photos/pictures, or demonstrating).

Year 3 & 4 T-Ball

There are a great number of people wanting to play Tee-ball which is wonderful - enough for 2 teams!  Unfortunately we don't have enough coaches owing to a clash with other after school activities. Teams need to be registered by Friday morning. If anyone is able to help with this group of  keen players  please contact Mrs Eastwood asap.

Room 3 Beginning of Year Newsletter

A hard copy of this will also be in the front of homework books.

Room 3 Newsletter
3 February 2017
Welcome to Room 3 and to a new block in the school for those joining us from Room 7. A big welcome to Mrs Bennett who is going to be sharing the teaching this year while I teach Reading Recovery. She will be teaching the maths and R.E. programme along with the much enjoyed Morning Programme on Fridays, and will be in the room from 8:55 till 10:30.

Room 3 Blog: I usually put up a weekly blog on a Monday night after staff or syndicate meetings.  If other things come up in between, I will put up an extra post. Once the term calendar is confirmed this will also be there for easy reference to the dates that involve this class. Mrs Bennett will also post information on the blog.
This week we have been doing activities to help us get to know each other, get along together and take responsibility for our own learning. We have already made a great start to setting up our books.
Brain Food: Please ensure that your child has a piece of unprocessed fruit or vegetable each day for brain food.

Swimming: Years 1 – 4 will be preparing for the swimming sports with afternoon swim sessions: Tuesday 7th, Thursday 9th, Tuesday 14th, Thursday 16th, Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd February.  We will leave the school at 12:45 and return 2:10. (Room 3 swims from 1:30 – 2pm). If there are parents willing to help with dressing or supervising groups please let me know. The swimming sports will be held at the pool on Tuesday 28th February beginning at 9:00. Junior swimmers will have races in the therapeutic pool between 10:30 – 11:30am. Transport to and from the pool will be by bus. This year the cost for swimming will be $6 per child with a maximum of $12 per family. I would appreciate parent help for the sports – timing and judging please.
Sunhats: need to be worn this term and in term 4. No hat = no play.  Children may choose something to do under the classroom verandah.

This year all junior school children have purchased the Kluwell “My Home Reading” book. This is the reading log. Year 4 will have a nightly reading log (Monday to Thursday) in the back of their homework book.  I will share how these new logs will work at the Meet the Teacher Evening on Wednesday 8th February. Poetry books will come home on a Friday and I ask you please to sign this after you have shared the poem together. There will be spelling to learn and study ladder, as the term goes on.

Scooters etc: during school time these need to be stored against the fence behind the miniball goal. After school scooters & wheels can be left in the corridor to be locked up over night. Remember that ‘wheels’ are for term 1 and 4 only.

Waitangi Day - Monday 6th February: Families of the  St Gerards whanau, to which we all belong, will gather at Pioneer Park from 11am for a picnic. Some sports  gear will be available for enjoying some games together. A holiday for us to celebrate belonging to New  Zealand. Feel free to bring others from outside the school. This initiative came from our Maori Pacifika families, and is now an annual event in the life of our school.

I am really excited about what is planned for this year, and am looking forward to working alongside Mrs Bennett and with you and your children as they continue on their learning journey.

Chris
