Room 3 Beginning of Year Newsletter

A hard copy of this will also be in the front of homework books.

Room 3 Newsletter
3 February 2017
Welcome to Room 3 and to a new block in the school for those joining us from Room 7. A big welcome to Mrs Bennett who is going to be sharing the teaching this year while I teach Reading Recovery. She will be teaching the maths and R.E. programme along with the much enjoyed Morning Programme on Fridays, and will be in the room from 8:55 till 10:30.

Room 3 Blog: I usually put up a weekly blog on a Monday night after staff or syndicate meetings.  If other things come up in between, I will put up an extra post. Once the term calendar is confirmed this will also be there for easy reference to the dates that involve this class. Mrs Bennett will also post information on the blog.
This week we have been doing activities to help us get to know each other, get along together and take responsibility for our own learning. We have already made a great start to setting up our books.
Brain Food: Please ensure that your child has a piece of unprocessed fruit or vegetable each day for brain food.

Swimming: Years 1 – 4 will be preparing for the swimming sports with afternoon swim sessions: Tuesday 7th, Thursday 9th, Tuesday 14th, Thursday 16th, Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd February.  We will leave the school at 12:45 and return 2:10. (Room 3 swims from 1:30 – 2pm). If there are parents willing to help with dressing or supervising groups please let me know. The swimming sports will be held at the pool on Tuesday 28th February beginning at 9:00. Junior swimmers will have races in the therapeutic pool between 10:30 – 11:30am. Transport to and from the pool will be by bus. This year the cost for swimming will be $6 per child with a maximum of $12 per family. I would appreciate parent help for the sports – timing and judging please.
Sunhats: need to be worn this term and in term 4. No hat = no play.  Children may choose something to do under the classroom verandah.

This year all junior school children have purchased the Kluwell “My Home Reading” book. This is the reading log. Year 4 will have a nightly reading log (Monday to Thursday) in the back of their homework book.  I will share how these new logs will work at the Meet the Teacher Evening on Wednesday 8th February. Poetry books will come home on a Friday and I ask you please to sign this after you have shared the poem together. There will be spelling to learn and study ladder, as the term goes on.

Scooters etc: during school time these need to be stored against the fence behind the miniball goal. After school scooters & wheels can be left in the corridor to be locked up over night. Remember that ‘wheels’ are for term 1 and 4 only.

Waitangi Day - Monday 6th February: Families of the  St Gerards whanau, to which we all belong, will gather at Pioneer Park from 11am for a picnic. Some sports  gear will be available for enjoying some games together. A holiday for us to celebrate belonging to New  Zealand. Feel free to bring others from outside the school. This initiative came from our Maori Pacifika families, and is now an annual event in the life of our school.

I am really excited about what is planned for this year, and am looking forward to working alongside Mrs Bennett and with you and your children as they continue on their learning journey.

Chris
