Week 4 Term 1

It was great to see so many of you at mass today - just as well we were not picnicking in the park, as the wind is very chilly.

ABC books: the last of these are being prepared. A great idea of mine, but it has been time consuming - thank you to those who have helped with this. How to use this book is explained on the front page. The younger readers have had theirs first up as they are not taking home books to read to you yet.

Swimming Sports - Thursday 28th

All students are to be at the pool by 9 am in their house colours. Brightly coloured clothing is great, but please no crepe paper – this marks the pool surroundings when it gets wet. Please make sure that your child has two towels – one for sitting on and using after races and the other to dry down with at the end of the sports. As it is very hot inside the pool, plenty of water should be packed along with a good sized morning tea. Children will be sitting with their houses.

Timetable: championship and non-championship races will begin as soon after 9 am as possible.
9:00 – 10:00 (approximately) championship & non-championship full length races.
10:15 – 10:30ish break for morning tea – Is there someone willing to arrange cuppas for the workers?
10:15 – 11 Junior school sports in the therapeutic pool.
11 – 12 Completion of championship and non-championship full length races. House relays – plus a lane for teachers and staff. Do you want to swim a leg of the parent relay? Is there anyone who can arrange a team of 4? This is a highlight for the kids – come on community!

Note: Parents of Junior school students wishing to watch their children we suggest you come 10 – 11.
Children will travel back to school after 12 by bus.

If you are unable to transport your bus child/children to the pool please let Mrs Beilby know by Wednesday, as staff will transport these children from school to the pool.

Junior School Camp:
Please ensure that your child's notice is returned by tomorrow (Monday). This will help us as we organise tents, supervision etc. Thank you to those people who have returned theirs already.

Seesaw:
Last week was a big learning step for me. Thank you to those of you who have set this app up. If anyone needs another copy of the how to set up sheet please let me know. My goal was to post something onto each student's page - nearly!! I will make sure that those whose I didn't quite get to, will have something this week.

School Garden:
Once again Rachael Baxter is willing to work in the school garden on Wednesday afternoons. Room 3 are lucky to work in small groups with the seniors and Rachael. Each child will get the opportunity to get some hands on learning - the roster is on the classroom window. Group 2 will be this week. Thank you so much for offering your skills in this way, Rachael.

Homework books will come home this week. The Studyladder log-in information is there, plus a 1-10 sheet. Please practise counting up to 10 and back down. Use language like what is just before, just after. Which are odd numbers? even numbers? Sheets with 100 will be put into some people's books as we move into the term.

Reading log books:
I haven't used these before, but some people are making great use of all the activities available - Religious Education  as well as the word lists at the back of the book.

Years 1 & 2 will be learning Kapahaka with Ms Tamati after play tomorrow.

March already at the end of the week, where have the first weeks gone?

Have a great week.

Chris

Week 3 Term 1

What's happening this week?

Tuesday:

  • Swimming. We will be at the pool from 9 -11am, returning to school by bus at 11:10
  • Bus safety with Mr Milford at 11:40.
Assembly this Friday organised by the Year 7 & 8 team.

Sunday 24th February:
  • There is the school Mass and picnic at 10.00am at Pioneer Park. Families are to bring a salad or dessert and there will be picnic games before lunch. BBQ sausages will be provided. Please support Father Vaughan and the school by attending this outdoor mass.

Junior School Camp:
  • We now have a definite date for our Room 7, 3 and 4 Camp, which is Thursday 7th/Friday 8th March. We are camping overnight at school on the Thursday and doing various activities on the Friday. We will need 4-6 person tents for the overnight camp, parents to help erect these, some parents to stay overnight and/or join us for the activities on Friday. A camp notice will be sent home this week.
Goal setting Sheets:
  • Thank you to those people who returned these by last Friday. If yours is still sitting on the bench, it would be great to have these back.
Seesaw:
  • I have set up a Room 3 account and sent home the information sheets on Friday for families to sign up. Well done to those who have. This is a learning curve for me, so all may not be perfect to start with as this "technological immigrant" gets to grips with this. I will attempt to get something on each child's account by the end of the week. Trying to go solo on this now, so could be interesting.
Reading:
  • Please continue reading to your child. Some people also have a book to read to you, and all children will have an ABC book by the end of the week. Please make sure that your child can say the letter name, make the sound for the letter, and give a word that starts with that sound. It has been interesting to see that there are gaps in this knowledge with everyone.  Thank you to the parents & grandparents who have helped me set these books out.
It is great to see how quickly your children have established the class routines. Please encourage this independence, especially with keeping track of their own clothing and bringing their reading folder everyday.

Have a great week.

Chris

Tuesday 19th Swimming Practice Day

Tuesday 19th Swimming Practice Day

Children in Rooms 3, 4, 6 and 7 are to be dropped at the pool by 8:55am.
Please do not go into the pool, wait for your teacher. If you are coming to
school by bus and need to be taken to the pool, let your classroom teacher
know by Monday, so that transport can be arranged.

  • Rooms 7, 3 & 4 will return to school by bus at 11:10.
  • Room 6 will swim from 9:00 - 9:40 and will walk back school with
Mrs Laidlaw and parents. Please let Mrs Laidlaw know if you are able
to assist with supervision at the pool an/or can walk back to school with the class.

  • Room 5 will walk to and from the pool. They swim from 9:40 - 10:20.
  • Rooms 1/2 will walk and swim 10:20 - 11am.

As we are lucky enough to have all 6 lanes in the main pool for this 2 hour block,
all classes will need extra parents to assist with supervision, so that we can
make the best use of this. Rooms 7, 3 and 4 would welcome any parents
willing to get into the water  with the children, and to assist with dressing afterwards.

School Swimming Sports

Thank you to the 5 people who have offered help as timekeepers on this day.
We are looking for 18, so if you haven’t already made contact we look forward
to your help.

Does anyone have a free hour?

During my release time today I have made a start on the ABC notebooks - a task that has taken much more time than I had expected. If there is anyone who could spare a little time to make these up, I would be very appreciative, as that would mean that children get theirs more quickly. As I said at the meeting last night, we are going to have a strong focus on building really secure alphabet knowledge as a foundation to reading and writing.

Don't forget the goal setting sheets need to be returned by Friday.

Why Read Aloud?

Information from "reading Aloud' site. - why this is our home reading for the start of the term.
BENEFITS OF READING ALOUD to your child
·       Fosters a love of reading
·       Children enjoy stories without the frustration of reading
·       Builds listening and comprehension skills
·       Makes complex ideas accessible
·       Models fluent reading
·       Expands vocabulary
·       Builds grammar
·       Teaches pronunciation of new words
·       Except when we don’t know how to pronounce them either! (‘Amorphophallus paeoniifolius’, anyone?)
·       Introduces authors, texts, and genres they might not choose themselves
·       Develops imagination and creativity
·       Promotes discussion and critical thinking
·       Starts meaningful conversations
·       Strengthens emotional bonds
AND THERE’S A NEW AND IMPORTANT ONE YOU CAN ADD TO THAT LIST
Around the time many people stop reading aloud to their children they start expecting more from them as WRITERS.
Middle-graders must produce well-written essays, reports, and stories to succeed in school, and strong written communication skills are a prerequisite in this digital age.
If you ask pretty much anyone how to improve writing skills they’ll tell you to READ, READ, READ.

2019 Week 1 Term 1

I hope you have all had the opportunity to spend time with families over this holiday break. I certainly have, with 3 family weddings and a trip to Auckland to see Aladdin.
We are very lucky in Room 3 as we now have air conditioning installed. Wow what a difference this has made, although I didn't get into the classroom to get sorted until Friday.

We will all be finding our way this week as we settle into a new area of the school and get to know each other. I am very excited about teaching back in Year 1&2 and learning all about Action Stations.

We have 21 children in our room, with some having been at school only a very short time to some children who I am sure will enjoy being awesome leaders, helping me and their newer classmates.

This week I will send home books from our library corner for you to read to your child while I establish where your child's reading level is, at the beginning of the year. Please record these books in your child's reading log. Each morning I expect children to bring their reading folders into the classroom and put them into the yellow box inside the classroom door. Please support your child to do this for themselves each morning as we encourage their independence. Routines such as this will be a focus as we set up our learning environment over the early weeks.

Upcoming dates:
Wednesday 6th Feb: Waitangi Day - informal gathering of school families at Pioneer Park 11-1. Sports gear will be there for games, Thank you Loretta for being available to take this down.

Tuesday 12th Feb: Meet the Teacher Evening - from 5:30. Check the school newsletter for more information.

Tuesday 19th  Feb: School Swimming - all classes will have 1 session at the pool prior to the swimming sports.

Sunday 24th Feb: Parish Picnic & School Mass - 10am Pioneer Park

Thursday 28th Feb: School Swimming Sports 9am - 12. (Junior school will have their races in the therapeutic pool 10 - 11am) If you are able to assist with timekeeping for the sports please let me know. Note: the events in the main pool stop while the junior sports are run, so you will be able to watch your children.

Walk & Wheel Week - March 4th - 8th

March 21st: School Triathlon

Junior School Camp - will be this term with the date yet to be confirmed. This is a 1 night sleepover here in Alexandra - normally early March.

Looking forward to getting to know you all over the next couple of weeks.

Oh no - sorry all. I was just finished this as my Australian visitors arrived and clearly I didn't push publish. My apologies.

This year another challenge to me will be "technology" as I learn to use 'seesaw' to share with you what your children are learning at school.
