Morning Programme 5th August 2016

Spot the birthday cake...

Today's marvellous crew got Morning Programme for Term 3 off to a magnificent start

"Well Done" team

Dusty got us underway today, telling us about a place special to her.  Dusty's special place is Dunedin, a city on the coast of Otago.  Dusty used to live in Dunedin so this makes it a favourite spot.  She has lots of her family there and enjoys going there to catch up with them all, especially her wee baby cousin, Crickett.  She also likes going to the shops, like Toyworld!

Next up, was Payton who told us about a very exciting current event - The Olympic games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The very first games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece and did you know, they didn't even wear clothes!  The Olympic Games happen every 4 years.  New Zeland has 199 athletes competing.  There are 206 countries from around the world competing. Unfortunately Russia doesn't have all their athletes competing because they haven't been honest.  Payton is really looking forward to watching some gymnastics.  What are you looking forward to?
After Payton was Alia, who spoke to us about famous New Zealand singer and recording artist, Anika Moa.  She started writing songs when she was only 13 and then when she was just 21, she topped the NZ singles chart with her album called "Thinking Room."  Now she is older and has 3 children, she writes songs for babies and children too.  Alia was lucky enough to meet her after she performed in Oamaru.

Following Alia, was Quinn who shared a book review with us. Quinn likes learning about skeletons, so he shared a non-fiction book called "See Inside Your Body" by Katie Daynes and Colin King. Quinn told us how we have 206 bones when we are grown up and that the bones in our spine protect our spinal cord.  He told us how we would be a big blob of jelly if we didn't have any bones or muscles to hold us up.  He also told us how our brain is the control centre for our bodies - it is like a computer.  What an interesting book.

Jelena also shared a book review.  She shared a fiction book from one of her favourite series of books, Zac Power.  "Zac Runs Wild" by H I Larry, illustrated by Cal Bennett is about Zac and his friend Anna who go to a spy camp.  Their mission is to get past wild animals without getting hurt...  Jelena really enjoys these books as they make her want to read more and more.  She recommends them for boys and girls and told us we can get them out from the Alexandra Public Library.

Last up today was the birthday boy, Jack. (Yes, another 8 year old in room 3!)  And how appropriate that Jack told us how to make a chocolate birthday cake.  He shared the recipe with us and then we went to the staff room to follow the instructions and make the cake. When we finished, we got to try a little bit of the mixture, it was delicious.  Later with Mrs Beilby we got to eat the finished product.  Yum-o and a BIG "Happy Birthday Jack"
